Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate to work on an EPSRC funded project entitled “Hybrid lightweight structural systems for low-cost housing (HYLIGHTS)” bringing together academic partners from three universities and a number of industrial partners.
This research project is a collaboration between Imperial College London, the University of Aberdeen and the University of Sheffield. It will involve large scale physical testing, numerical simulations and the development of design rules for cold-formed steel structural systems.
This is a fixed term appointment from February 2023 until August 2025.
Duties and responsibilities
This post will carry out research programmes to investigate the behaviour and design of hybrid steel structures with stainless steel connection elements. The project will involve physical testing in the Structures Laboratory, finite element modelling using the software ABAQUS, the creation of analytical models and the establishment of statistically verified structural design rules, suitable for use in practice.
Essential requirements
- Hold, or be near completion of, a PhD in Structural Engineering or a closely related field, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience, as well as an excellent honours degree and ideally MSc in Civil/Structural Engineering
- Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals
- Knowledge of stainless-steel structures
- Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature
- Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative

This is a fixed term appointment from February 2023 until August 2025 and you will be based at South Kensington Campus.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 - £41,388 per annum.
