The Institute of Global Health Innovation (IGHI) is one of the six global challenge institutes at Imperial College. Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, the Institute is well placed to leverage the College’s wealth of multidisciplinary talent to innovate across science, technology, design and policy. By doing so, the Institute aims to develop cutting-edge solutions to the challenges faced by healthcare systems and to elicit transformational improvement in the quality and equity of patient care and population health and wellbeing. The Institute attracts a strong cohort of students and scholars across its educational and academic programmes and continues to advance a broadening research agenda, which encompasses new and impactful interdisciplinary centres of excellence

The IGHI has five research centres; the Centre for Health Policy (CHP), the Hamlyn Centre for Robotics Surgery, the Helix Centre for Design in Healthcare (Helix), the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Imperial Patient Safety Translational Research Centre (PSTRC) and the Imperial College Centre for African Research and Engagement (ICCARE). These work within their respective areas of excellence and across overlapping themes to identify, develop and diffuse simple, high-impact and cost-effective health innovations.

Duties and responsibilities

Professor Darzi’s portfolio of scientific research interests has undergone a significant expansion in recent years; the post-holder will be a core member of Professor Darzi’s team and provide scientific and academic expertise to support the expanding research portfolios of the IGHI and Prof. Darzi’s affiliated programmes of research.   This includes the Patient Safety and Translational research center, The Hamlyn Centre, Clinically focused research at The Department of Surgery and Cancer, the Big Data Analytical Unit, and the NHS Digital Academy and the post-holder will therefore have an instrumental role to play in managing Professor Darzi’s scientific engagement with these organizations, and across his wider areas of scientific interest.   The post-holder will bring a breadth of scientific knowledge across technology and research to support key strategic and science-based decisions.

The role also encompasses pastoral care for Professor Darzi’s postgraduate research students, coordinating student/project activities, ensuring university standards are upheld, achieving research milestones, pastoral needs, student participation in departmental projects and organizational (clinical and non-clinical) activities with Professor Darzi’s research manager and the department’s divisional manager. 

Essential requirements

Professor Darzi is also the Co-Director of the HELIX Centre which is joint with the Royal College of Arts, a multi-disciplinary medical design team, working to find evidence-based creative solutions to real health problems. The post-holder will be required to contribute academic, scientific and clinical input to HELIX’s growing innovation research portfolio, and to support the HELIX team in measuring the national impact of these innovations and bringing new projects to market. Professor Darzi also leads on MSc programmed in the university and the post-holder will contribute to coordination, teaching and assessment activities on these programmes.  

More broadly, the post holder will be instrumental in providing scientific expertise to develop and quality assure academic research being undertaken under the auspices of Professor Darzi, and to assist in building the profile of the Institute of Global Health Innovation, and its affiliated Centres, with national and international stakeholders.
