We wish to appoint a world-leading clinical or non-clinical scientist to the Margaret Turner Warwick Chair of Thoracic Medicine.  You will also lead the Margaret Turner Warwick Education Centre for Fibrosing Lung Disease.  The ‘Margaret Turner Warwick Chair of Thoracic Medicine’ sits within the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) and is one of the Departments and Colleges most prestigious and senior Chairs. 

The MTW Centre in Fibrosing Lung Disease represents a partnership between academic staff within NHLI and the many interstitial lung disease (ILD) clinicians working in the Imperial Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) – Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (St Mary’s and Hammersmith Hospital), Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital NHS Trust, Royal Marsden Hospital and Chelsea Westminster Hospital NHS Trust.  The purpose of the MTW Centre is to increase fundamental knowledge of the biology of fibrosis as the necessary basis for the development, evaluation and introduction into clinical practice of novel safe effective treatments for fibrosing lung disease. 

Duties and responsibilities


  • To develop a broad range of research within department.

  • To direct, lead, or contribute to, a research area with scientists, [clinicians], technicians and students at the highest scientifically rigorous levels.

  • To supervise, train and mentor scientists, clinicians, technicians and students at the highest scientifically rigorous levels.

  • To obtain funds and research grants and to encourage and guide junior research staff to do the same.

  • To manage research projects.

  • To publish high quality research in peer reviewed journals.

  • To develop contacts with other research organisations, both academic and commercial.

  • To teach and examine courses at all levels – undergraduate, masters and higher research degrees – through lectures, seminars, tutorials, course work, clinical training (where applicable) and personal supervision.

  • To act as a coach and role model through excellent practice and mentoring of colleagues.

  • To supervise MD and PhD candidates.

  • To train junior medical and nursing staff in the clinical setting (for clinicians)

  • To contribute to curriculum development.

  • To take a leading role in, or contribute to, the development of teaching and teaching methods and assessment.

Essential requirements

A MD, PhD or equivalent.

In addition you must also meet the following essential criteria:

  • An international reputation in the field of research
  • A sustained track record in attracting high levels of research funding
  • Extensive experience in leading the design of research programmes
  • An excellent publication record
  • Experience of training undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Experience of supervision of higher degrees (PhD)
  • The ability to communicate well, conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively
  • Proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues, ensuring the effective performance and development of a leading research department

In addition to above, for Clinical appointment you must have:

  • A full UK GMC (General Medical Council) registration with an appropriate specialist qualification or eligibility for entry into the GMC Specialist Register within 6 months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee meeting.
  • A membership of the relevant Royal College (UK) or an equivalent qualification
  • An appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • An understanding of clinical risk management
  • Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at consultant level
  • A statement regarding appropriate training and experience including that relating to a special interest
  • Evidence of expertise in an appropriate field
  • An understanding of principles of clinical audit
