The post therefore offers an exciting opportunity to work in the area of applied infection research, in partnership Public Health England (PHE) and other partner organisations including the Universities of Warwick and Cambridge and Imperial Healthcare Partners.
You will work with other researchers, PhD students and leading academics to deliver projects which aim to maximise the utility of data collected within the NHS and PHE, building on existing work.
These projects will use clinical practice research datalink (CPRD), second generation surveillance system (SGSS), other national data-sets and high velocity, high volume data which is uniquely available to us, such as the comprehensive patient electronic health records (EHR) of Imperial College Hospitals NHS Trust ) and the Whole Systems Integrated Care (WSIC) database in NW London.
They will seek to answer questions around how we can best develop and use newly accessible population-level and linked health datasets to better understand; (1) AMR, infection transmission (2) how the use of advanced methods and tools can enable us to dynamically understand risk and vulnerable populations such as the elderly, multi-morbid, those in long-term care facilities and (3) how methodologies can be developed that monitor potential unintended consequences across the healthcare economy.
Projects will also look at combining deterministic and probabilistic (hybrid) modelling using participatory approaches to model development and the impact of multi-level polices and the role of social determinants and access to antimicrobials. Research will be informed by our health systems and policy expertise, strengthened further by links with Harvard's Department of Health Policy. There will also be a number of cross-theme projects which may involve, for example, working to support research into the use of Artificial Intelligence to optimise prescribing.
Importantly, you will also have a “responsive research capacity role” which will require you to address any approved requests from Public Health England for additional research needed to assist them in fulfilling their role to protect the public and improve the nation’s health. This might include, for example, the investigation of an unexpected surge or outbreak.
Duties and responsibilities
You will design, conduct and write-up statistical analyses and mathematical models of risk of infection including community onset and healthcare associated infections, surgical site infection (SSI), and Healthcare Onset Covid (HOCI).
You will also develop and apply statistical and mathematical models for infections, AMR, antimicrobial use and other associated clinical and non-clinical outcomes, identifying and developing suitable techniques for the collection and analysis of data, ensuring that projects the theme and overall programme build on best practice and are responsive to national and international developments.
There will also be opportunities to contribute to grant applications and publications and you will be expected to support MSc and PhD student projects as well as staff and to take initiatives in the planning of research including directing the work of small research teams collaborating with other researchers within the HPRU, across Imperial College, Public Health England, the NHS Trust, and our partner organisations elsewhere in the UK or abroad, as appropriate.
The ideal candidate will have:
- At Research Associate level: PhD (or equivalent) in Epidemiology, mathematics, bioinformatics, Statistics, Health Services Research or a related numerate subject
- At Research Assistant level: Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Epidemiology, mathematics, bioinformatics, Statistics, Health Services Research or a related numerate subject
- Experience of analysing quantitative complex data
- Extensive practical knowledge of a broad range of statistical techniques including generalised linear models, multilevel models and time series analyses
- Good knowledge of different computer programs including the use of at least one statistical package e.g. SAS and experience of developing scripts and analysing data using at least one statistical package, eg: R or Stata
- Experience of using NHS or HES data would be an advantage as would experience of working within a multidisciplinary research environment.
The post is full time and fixed term for 3 years. The post will be based across Charing Cross Campus, Hammersmith and White City Campus. There may be research commitments at Public Health England Colindale. The post holder will be expected to travel to other campuses as required.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 - £39,183 per annum.
