Image of Elena WattsCan you tell us about yourself?

I'm Elena, I am studying for my PhD with Professor Jason Riley in the Materials Department here at Imperial College London. I previously studied at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh where I completed an undergraduate masters degree in Chemistry with Nanotechnology. Outside of my PhD I love to go on long distance hikes, my most recent being the length of the Thames, and my next being the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

Can you provide a summary of your research?

I research novel ways to make transparent and flexible pressure sensors using a mix of advanced thin films fabrication techniques and conductive polymers.

Why you chose to study at Imperial and how has your experience been so far?

I chose to study at Imperial because the project was extremely interesting to me, the university has fantastic facilities to aid the research, and I wanted to experience life in London.

What is the current highlight of your PhD?

I think there are a lot of highlights from the PhD: from going on the Girona Barcelona retreat with the CDT ACM, to MRS in Boston, Cambridge and Windsor for trainings and courses, presenting my work, the list goes on!

5) What are your top tips for completing a PhD at Imperial?

Top tip to complete the work is to stay organised, continually evaluate where you are with your work, look after yourself, and enjoy your weekends!
