Overview

The Oesophago-gastric Cancer course objective is to encourage and develop areas of innovation with the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum at its core. This short course covers the pathological basis of the increasing incidence of cancer of the lower oesophagus and gastro-oesophageal junction, including the link between gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s oesophagus and cancer. Recent advances in the diagnosis of dysplasia in Barrett’s oesophagus and in the treatment of dysplasia and early cancer are also on the syllabus.

Themes, aims and teaching

The Oesophago-gastric (OG) Cancer course thematically covers fundamental principles behind the staging of OG cancer, management of OG cancer, the principles of surgery for OG cancer, minimally invasive surgery through to post-operative care.  Attendees are provided with an opportunity to extend their academic prowess and critically appraise the evidence base behind clinical trials in chemotherapy and radiotherapy.  Attendees are provided with the opportunity to gain knowledge of the pathological basis for GIST tumours of the stomach.  Face to face teaching is complemented by visits to the endoscopy suite for observing therapeutic endoscopy and to the operating theatre for observing cancer resections. 

Who is the course suitable for

This short course welcomes surgeons, surgeons in training, healthcare practitioners, nurses, multidisciplinary support staff involved in the care and treatment of Oesophogastric patients. Discounts are available for NHS employees. 

What to expect

  • The opportunity to work alongside masters students, with a ‘taster’ opportunity for attendees with an eye on postgraduate study.
  • The option to take part in formal assessment at Masters level in a world class university and receive a transcript from Imperial College. Or if assessment isn’t required you can opt for a certificate of attendance for your portfolio.  
  • The course is intense, Monday to Friday, nine to five.  The teaching is mainly face to face but interspersed with debate, interactive workshops and observations in theatre.
