Brain sciences
We host a unique portfolio of world leading translational research in neurosciences and mental health focusing on neuropsychopharmacology and mental health, neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, and brain plasticity and recovery.
Cancer
We aim to enhance cancer prevention and improve treatments by understanding of how key biochemical pathways are changed in cancer, their underlying genetic and epigenetic causes, and how patients can receive the best targeted therapies.
Cardiovascular
We undertake pioneering research into increasing our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of cardiovascular disease, and cutting edge translational research to improve diagnosis and prevention and lead to superior, more targeted therapies.

Chronic disease epidemiology
We are addressing the epidemic of chronic, non-communicable diseases by focusing research towards understanding the environmental causes of these diseases, improving health, preventing disease, and influencing policy on a global scale.

Clinical trials and evaluation
We are at the forefront of evaluation of the benefits and risks of treatments and interventions, through clinical trials, pharmaco-epidemiology, and evaluations of health service performance.

Computational and systems medicine
We work with complex patient data, modelling them in unique and interactive ways that allow clinicians to make better-informed decisions about patient care. We host the world class MRC-NIHR National Phenome Centre.

Respiratory
We are at the forefront of research into respiratory infectious diseases and chronic lung disease. Our Respiratory Medicine group has the largest critical mass of respiratory researchers in the UK.
Surgery and surgical technology
We work across different disciplines to deliver improvements in surgical practice, clinical safety and surgical education. Our research facilities include the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery and the Centre for Patient Safety and Service Quality.
