CATO Masterclasses

CATO Masterclasses are short bite-sized sessions focussing on specific topics. The annual programme includes 6 Masterclasses divided into 2 strands; the Career Development strand and the Researcher Development strand which covers research skills/knowledge and current topics relevant to research.  Previous Masterclass topics have included:

  • Health Economics
  • Pitfalls using big data
  • Quality of Life, PROMS and PREMS
  • Applying for Intermediate Fellowships
  • Using UK Biobank data

Masterclasses are organised as stand-alone sessions and also incorporated into other larger event programmes.

CATO Research Symposium

The annual multi-professional CATO Symposium is a key part of clinical academic training and research career development for clinicians at all levels of training. It usually takes place in June and is open to attendees from all clinical professions (medical and non-medical).  It provides clinical academics with opportunities to present their research to a diverse audience, exposes trainees to a wider range of research than their day to day experience, allows space to think of novel collaborations and provides excellent networking opportunities. The programme also incorporates Masterclass-style workshop sessions on subjects such as writing fellowship applications.

The symposium is open to Academic Foundation Trainees, Academic Clinical Fellows, Clinical Research Training Fellows/Clinical PhD fellows and Clinical Lecturers at Imperial College London.

Clinical Academic Careers Event

The annual CATO ‘Academic Opportunities for Junior Doctors – how to develop a career in academic medicine’ session usually takes place every October. The session provides an overview of all opportunities, national and local to Imperial, and tips on how to succeed in clinical academic posts. Attendees have a chance to meet with representatives from the main research funders and to network with clinical academics from all career stages and multiple clinical specialties.

This session is open to clinical academic trainees in posts at Imperial College London and doctors in clinical training working across the North West London area.

Please visit the CATO Events page to see the events that are currently available and book your place.
