The NDAU encourages the use of the National Neonatal Research Database (NNRD) for evaluating neonatal outcomes nationally, regionally, and locally. Utilising data already collected for the NNRD reduces the burden of data collection placed on neonatal staff driving the principle of collecting data once for multiple purposes.

The NNRD is the only source of complete and verified national neonatal data for England, Scotland and Wales; the NDAU has a mechanism in place to obtain permission from individual NHS Trusts and Health Boards to carry out neonatal outcomes work.

In the past, the NDAU has supported many neonatal outcomes projects undertaken by various groups including NHS Manchester, NHS Clinical Reference Group, Public Health England, and health researchers. In addition, the NDAU carries out outcomes analyses for neonatal networks and the National Neonatal Audit Programme.
