Death of Her Majesty The Queen

Updated Monday 12 September 2022

We are extremely saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen. We offer our deepest condolences to the Royal Family.

Imperial has close and historic ties with The Queen, who witnessed several important College milestones. We have reflected on her reign in our College news story.

We know that our community may be affected by this news. Support is available for students and staff via the Student Support Zone and Confidential Care. An online condolence book is available via the Royal Family website.

Changes to College activities

There will now be a period of national mourning. Our research and teaching activities will continue during this time, with the exception of the day of the State Funeral on Monday 19 September, which will be a College closure day and our campus services and libraries will be closed. Some roads around Imperial’s South Kensington Campus will be closed from Sunday 18 September for the State Funeral. More detailed information will be shared in the coming days, and we will keep this page updated.

Exams scheduled for the day of the State Funeral will be rescheduled as a priority and we will update students on the arrangements for those as soon as we can. Exams on other days will proceed as planned. If you need to travel to our London campuses, please check TfL for the latest travel advice and allow extra time for your journey given the expected large crowds in the capital.

While core events are continuing, including our Open Day on Saturday 17 September, most non-essential College events are being postponed. If you have any questions about campus events you may be planning, please contact Jane Neary or Anna Lusby who can provide advice.
