Alex undertook his undergraduate medical training and a BSc in Surgery and Anaesthesia at Imperial College from 1998. He completed his Basic Surgical Training and Higher specialist training in London and  is currently in London post FRCS and completion of training (CCT).

He Joined the Centre for Patient Safety and Service Quality (CPSSQ) to undertake a full time PhD having commenced in October 2009 and was awarded his PhD with his thesis entitled: "High Performance in Surgery". His current research aim is to identify and develop markers and metrics for defining High Performance in Surgery using existing and novel metrics. The research was funded by a grant from the NIHR.

On-going interests and research themes include surgical complication management and developing Failure To Rescue metrics from routinely collected national data.

He has completed a study entitled High Performance in Surgery (HiPer) that aimed to understand what factors influence and determine the quantative outcome metrics commonly reported when surgical units are compared.
