This contribution deals with reliability work for mechanic products in early stages of design. The goal of this paper is to show how the selection of concepts can be supported out of the view of reliability engineering. In early stages of design there are only imprecise information about the conceptually described systems. Thus also the input data for lifetime calculations is influenced by uncertainties. This fact can be taken into account by considering input data as random variables according to a representative distribution function. By use of Monte Carlo simulations the selection of a concept is supported by computing ordering numbers. At this we present a new stochastic order which seems to be well suited for purposes of reliability related ordering.

This contribution deals with systematically securing the reliability of mechatronic products in early development phases. As the term mechatronics nowadays also encompasses software stakes it is the aim to present an approach to systematically develop reliable software-intensive mechatronic products. The aim is to present a method that evaluates different solutions with respect to reaching a certain given reliability goal. The presented approach concentrates on early development phases, where decision making has the most extensive impact on later product success.
