The Λ_{c}^{+}K^{-} mass spectrum is studied with a data sample of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6  fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. Three Ξ_{c}^{0} states are observed with a large significance and their masses and natural widths are measured to be m[Ξ_{c}(2923)^{0}]=2923.04±0.25±0.20±0.14  MeV, Γ[Ξ_{c}(2923)^{0}]=7.1±0.8±1.8  MeV, m[Ξ_{c}(2939)^{0}]=2938.55±0.21±0.17±0.14  MeV, Γ[Ξ_{c}(2939)^{0}]=10.2±0.8±1.1  MeV, m[Ξ_{c}(2965)^{0}]=2964.88±0.26±0.14±0.14  MeV, Γ[Ξ_{c}(2965)^{0}]=14.1±0.9±1.3  MeV, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the limited knowledge of the Λ_{c}^{+} mass. The Ξ_{c}(2923)^{0} and Ξ_{c}(2939)^{0} baryons are new states. The Ξ_{c}(2965)^{0} state is in the vicinity of the known Ξ_{c}(2970)^{0} baryon; however, their masses and natural widths differ significantly.

A search for the decays B0s→e+e− and B0→e+e− is performed using data collected with the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1, 2, and 2  fb−1, respectively. No signal is observed. Assuming no contribution from B0→e+e− decays, an upper limit on the branching fraction B(B0s→e+e−)<9.4(11.2)×10−9 is obtained at 90(95)% confidence level. If no B0s→e+e− contribution is assumed, a limit of B(B0→e+e−)<2.5(3.0)×10−9 is determined at 90(95)% confidence level. These upper limits are more than one order of magnitude lower than the previous values.

The ratio of branching fractions of the decays Λ0b → pK−e+e− and Λ0b → pK−μ+μ−,R−1pK, is measured for the first time using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1 recorded with the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. In the dilepton mass-squared range 0.1 < q2< 6.0 GeV2/c4 and the pK− mass range m(pK−) < 2600 MeV/c2, the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be R−1pK=1.17+0.18−0.16±0.07, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the first test of lepton universality with b baryons and the first observation of the decay Λ0b → pK−e+e−.

The element |Vcb| of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is measured using semileptonic B0s decays produced in proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb−1. Rates of B0s→D−sμ+νμ and B0s→D*−sμ+νμ decays are analyzed using hadronic form-factor parametrizations derived either by Caprini, Lellouch and Neubert (CLN) or by Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed (BGL). The measured values of |Vcb| are (41.4±0.6±0.9±1.2)×10−3 and (42.3±0.8±0.9±1.2)×10−3 in the CLN and BGL parametrization, respectively. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is due to the external inputs used in the measurement. These results are in agreement with those obtained from decays of B+ and B0 mesons. They are the first determinations of |Vcb| at a hadron-collider experiment and the first using B0s meson decays.

The SHiP experiment is proposed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/c proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. About 1011 muons per spill will be produced in the dump. To design the experiment such that the muon-induced background is minimized, a precise knowledge of the muon spectrum is required. To validate the muon flux generated by our Pythia and GEANT4 based Monte Carlo simulation (FairShip), we have measured the muon flux emanating from a SHiP-like target at the SPS. This target, consisting of 13 interaction lengths of slabs of molybdenum and tungsten, followed by a 2.4 m iron hadron absorber was placed in the H4 400 GeV/c proton beam line. To identify muons and to measure the momentum spectrum, a spectrometer instrumented with drift tubes and a muon tagger were used. During a 3-week period a dataset for analysis corresponding to (3.27±0.07) × 1011 protons on target was recorded. This amounts to approximatively 1% of a SHiP spill.

The ratio of the B0s and B+ fragmentation fractions fs and fu is studied with B0s→J/ψϕ and B+→J/ψK+ decays using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7, 8, and 13 TeV center-of-mass energies. The analysis is performed in bins of B-meson momentum, longitudinal momentum, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity, and rapidity. The fragmentation-fraction ratio fs/fu is observed to depend on the B-meson transverse momentum with a significance of 6.0σ. This dependency is driven by the 13 TeV sample (8.7σ), while the results for the other collision energies are not significant when considered separately. Furthermore, the results show a 4.8σ evidence for an increase of fs/fu as a function of collision energy.

The Cabibbo-suppressed semileptonic decay B+→pp¯¯¯μ+νμ is observed for the first time using a sample of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0, 2.0 and 1.7 fb−1 at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. The differential branching fraction is measured as a function of the pp¯¯¯ invariant mass using the decay mode B+→ J/ψK+ for normalisation. The total branching fraction is measured to beB(B+→pp¯¯¯μ+νμ)=(5.27+0.23−0.24±0.21±0.15)×10−6,where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is from the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the normalisation channel.

Ratios of isospin amplitudes in hadron decays are a useful probe of the interplay between weak and strong interactions and allow searches for physics beyond the standard model. We present the first results on isospin amplitudes in b-baryon decays, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5  fb−1, collected with the LHCb detector in pp collisions at center of mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The isospin amplitude ratio |A1(Λ0b→J/ψΣ0)/A0(Λ0b→J/ψΛ)|, where the subscript on A indicates the final-state isospin, is measured to be less than 1/21.8 at 95% confidence level. The Cabibbo suppressed Ξ0b→J/ψΛ decay is observed for the first time, allowing for the measurement |A0(Ξ0b→J/ψΛ)/A1/2(Ξ0b→J/ψΞ0)|=0.37±0.06±0.02, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

We report four narrow peaks in the Ξ0bK− mass spectrum obtained using pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9  fb−1 recorded by the LHCb experiment. Referring to these states by their mass, the mass values are m[Ωb(6316)−]=6315.64±0.31±0.07±0.50  MeV, m[Ωb(6330)−]=6330.30±0.28±0.07±0.50  MeV, m[Ωb(6340)−]=6339.71±0.26±0.05±0.50  MeV, m[Ωb(6350)−]=6349.88±0.35±0.05±0.50  MeV, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and the last is due to the knowledge of the Ξ0b mass. The natural widths of the three lower mass states are consistent with zero, and the 90% confidence-level upper limits are determined to be Γ[Ωb(6316)−]<2.8  MeV, Γ[Ωb(6330)−]<3.1  MeV and Γ[Ωb(6340)−]<1.5  MeV. The natural width of the Ωb(6350)− peak is 1.4+1.0−0.8±0.1  MeV, which is 2.5σ from zero and corresponds to an upper limit of 2.8 MeV. The peaks have local significances ranging from 3.6σ to 7.2σ. After accounting for the look-elsewhere effect, the significances of the Ωb(6316)− and Ωb(6330)− peaks are reduced to 2.1σ and 2.6σ, respectively, while the two higher mass peaks exceed 5σ. The observed peaks are consistent with expectations for excited Ω−b resonances.

A four-body amplitude analysis of the B−→D*+π−π− decay is performed, where fractions and relative phases of the various resonances contributing to the decay are measured. Several quasi-model-independent analyses are performed aimed at searching for the presence of new states and establishing the quantum numbers of previously observed charmed meson resonances. In particular the resonance parameters and quantum numbers are determined for the D1(2420), D1(2430), D0(2550), D∗1(2600), D2(2740) and D∗3(2750) states. The mixing between the D1(2420) and D1(2430) resonances is studied and the mixing parameters are measured. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7  fb−1, collected in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector.

A measurement of the Ξ++cc mass is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018 in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb−1. The Ξ++cc candidates are reconstructed via the decay modes Ξ++cc→Λ+cK−π+π+ and Ξ++cc→Ξ+cπ+. The production of $\varXi _{cc}^ {++}$ baryons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\;{\rm{TeV}}$ is measured in the transverse-momentum range $4 \lt p_{\rm{T}} \lt 15\;{\rm{GeV}}/c$ and the rapidity range $2.0 \lt y \lt 4.5$. The data used in this measurement correspond to an integrated luminosity of $1.7\;{\rm{fb}}^{-1}$, recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2016. The ratio of the $\varXi _{cc}^ {++}$ production cross-section times the branching fraction of the $\varXi _{cc}^ {++} \to \varLambda _c^ + K^-\pi^+ \pi^+$ decay relative to the prompt $\varLambda _c^ + $ production cross-section is found to be $(2.22\pm 0.27 \pm 0.29)\times 10^{-4}$, assuming the central value of the measured $\varXi _{cc}^ {++}$ lifetime, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Searches are performed for both promptlike and long-lived dark photons, A^{'}, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. These searches look for A^{'}→μ^{+}μ^{-} decays using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5  fb^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector. Neither search finds evidence for a signal, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the γ-A^{'} kinetic mixing strength. The promptlike A^{'} search explores the mass region from near the dimuon threshold up to 70 GeV and places the most stringent constraints to date on dark photons with 214<m(A^{'})≲740  MeV and 10.6<m(A^{'})≲30  GeV. The search for long-lived A^{'}→μ^{+}μ^{-} decays places world-leading constraints on low-mass dark photons with lifetimes O(1)  ps.

The results of an amplitude analysis of the charmless three-body decay B+→π+π+π−, in which CP-violation effects are taken into account, are reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb−1 of pp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. The most challenging aspect of the analysis is the description of the behavior of the π+π−  S-wave contribution, which is achieved by using three complementary approaches based on the isobar model, the K-matrix formalism, and a quasi-model-independent procedure. Additional resonant contributions for all three methods are described using a common isobar model, and include the ρ(770)0, ω(782) and ρ(1450)0 resonances in the π+π− P-wave, the f2(1270) resonance in the π+π− D-wave, and the ρ3(1690)0 resonance in the π+π− F-wave. Significant CP-violation effects are observed in both S- and D-waves, as well as in the interference between the S- and P-waves. The results from all three approaches agree and provide new insight into the dynamics and the origin of CP-violation effects in B+→π+π+π− decays.

A search for the doubly charmed baryon Ξ+cc is performed through its decay to the Λ+cK−π+ final state, using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. No significant signal is observed in the mass range from 3.4 to 3.8 GeV/c2. Upper limits are set at 95% credibility level on the ratio of the Ξ+cc production cross-section times the branching fraction to that of Λ+c and Ξ++cc baryons. The limits are determined as functions of the Ξ+cc mass for different lifetime hypotheses, in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 4 to 15 GeV/c.

The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) experiment proposal at CERN demands a dedicated dipole magnet for its scattering and neutrino detector. This requires a very large volume to be uniformly magnetized at B>1.2 T, with constraints regarding the inner instrumented volume as well as the external region, where no massive structures are allowed and only an extremely low stray field is admitted. A measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in B0s→ϕϕ decays is presented. Using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies s√ = 7 TeV in 2011, 8 TeV in 2012 and 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016, a signal yield of around 9000 B0s→ϕϕ decays is obtained. The CP-violating phase ϕss¯¯¯ss is measured to be −0.073 ± 0.115(stat) ± 0.027(syst) rad, under the assumption it is independent of the helicity of the ϕϕ decay. In addition, the CP-violating phases of the transverse polarisations under the assumption of CP conservation of the longitudinal phase are measured. The helicity-independent direct CP-violation parameter is also measured, and is found to be |λ| = 0.99 ± 0.05(stat) ± 0.01(syst). In addition, T-odd triple-product asymmetries are measured. The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis of CP conservation in b¯¯→s¯¯¯ss¯¯¯s transitions. Finally, a limit on the branching fraction of the B0 → ϕϕ decay is determined to be B(B0→ϕϕ)<2.7×10−8 at 90 % confidence level.

The first amplitude analysis of the B^{±}→π^{±}K^{+}K^{-} decay is reported based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0  fb^{-1} of pp collisions recorded in 2011 and 2012 with the LHCb detector. The data are found to be best described by a coherent sum of five resonant structures plus a nonresonant component and a contribution from ππ↔KK S-wave rescattering. The dominant contributions in the π^{±} K^{∓} and K^{+} K^{-} systems are the nonresonant and the B^{±}→ρ(1450)^{0}π^{±} amplitudes, respectively, with fit fractions around 30%. For the rescattering contribution, a sizable fit fraction is observed. This component has the largest CP asymmetry reported to date for a single amplitude of (-66±4±2)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant CP violation is observed in the other contributions.

The production of charged hadrons within jets recoiling against a Z boson is measured in proton-proton collision data at √s=8  TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment. The charged-hadron structure of the jet is studied longitudinally and transverse to the jet axis for jets with transverse momentum pT>20  GeV and in the pseudorapidity range 2.5<η<4. These are the first measurements of jet hadronization at these forward rapidities and also the first where the jet is produced in association with a Z boson. In contrast to previous hadronization measurements at the Large Hadron Collider, which are dominated by gluon jets, these measurements probe predominantly light-quark jets which are found to be more longitudinally and transversely collimated with respect to the jet axis when compared to the previous gluon dominated measurements. Therefore, these results provide valuable information on differences between quarks and gluons regarding nonperturbative hadronization dynamics.

This paper presents a fast approach to simulating muons produced in interactions of the SPS proton beams with the target of the SHiP experiment. The SHiP experiment will be able to search for new long-lived particles produced in a 400 GeV/c SPS proton beam dump and which travel distances between fifty metres and tens of kilometers. The SHiP detector needs to operate under ultra-low background conditions and requires large simulated samples of muon induced background processes. Through the use of Generative Adversarial Networks it is possible to emulate the simulation of the interaction of 400 GeV/c proton beams with the SHiP target, an otherwise computationally intensive process. For the simulation requirements of the SHiP experiment, generative networks are capable of approximating the full simulation of the dense fixed target, offering a speed increase by a factor of Script O(106). To evaluate the performance of such an approach, comparisons of the distributions of reconstructed muon momenta in SHiP's spectrometer between samples using the full simulation and samples produced through generative models are presented. The methods discussed in this paper can be generalised and applied to modelling any non-discrete multi-dimensional distribution.
