A new tribometer has been developed to determine friction under conditions that are representative of MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical-systems). The tribometer consists of a rotating silicon disc, loaded against a stationary silicon disc. Friction and film thickness values are measured using laser displacement techniques. In this study, two different test set-ups were used: a flat on flat specimen geometry, and a moving flat against a structured surface, similar to that of a miniature thrust pad bearing. Using this tribometer, hydrodynamic tests have been carried out with the specimens fully submerged in hydrocarbon lubricants. Results suggest that friction increases with sliding speed and decreases with increasing applied normal load, which is in accordance with the hydrodynamic theory. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Effective lubrication for micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) was studied. A new micro-tribometer was developed to measure friction and film thickness under conditions representative of MEMS. For hydrocarbon lubricants, friction increased with sliding speed and decreased with increasing applied normal load, which is in accord with hydrodynamic theory. Using low viscosity fluids, satisfactory friction coefficient values were obtained with negligible wear. Good agreement was obtained between experimental results and a finite difference model. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the World Tribology Congress (Kyoto, Japan 9/6-11/209).

This paper describes a new experimental method for measuring stator heat transfer in a rotor–stator disc system using an electrical heater array. The system is partially blocked at the periphery, with radial outflow of rotor-pumped air from an inlet at stator centre. The aim is to improve thermal performance prediction for air-cooled disc type electrical machines. Local Nusselt numbers were measured for 0.6<r/R<1 at three non-dimensional gap ratios G=g/R=(0.0106,0.0212,0.0297) and rotational Reynolds numbers 3.7e4less-than-or-equals, slantReθless-than-or-equals, slant5.6e5. Transition at the stator is observed to occur at Reθ>3e5 for all gap ratios. Increased Nusselt numbers at the periphery are observed for all Reθ and G because of the ingress of ambient air along the stator due to the rotor pumping effect.

The quality factor (Q) of integrated inductors is of great importance to radio frequency applications. Monolithic integration of out-of-plane Au inductors with Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) LC oscillators is reported in this paper. The recently developed self-assembly process involves in-plane fabrication of Au inductors and subsequent rotation of the structure by surface tension forces of a melting Sn hinge. The CMOS compatibility of this process is demonstrated through the integration of an LC oscillator with the self-assembled inductor using post-CMOS processing. At a 1.48 GHz oscillation frequency, a phase noise of -95 dBc/Hz is reported at a 100 kHz frequency offset. Obtained results show this technique to be promising for the integration of high Q inductors with commercial RF systems.
