Alasdair is a colorectal surgical trainee in Northwest London and NIHR Clinical Lecturer. His clinical interest is in minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer. His PhD under Prof. Masao Takata in 2010 considered the molecular mechanisms of sepsis and the immune response to surgical injury. He went on to complete the Academic Foundation Programme and was an Academic Clinical Fellow at Imperial. Alasdair's ongoing research interests include:
- The role of the gut microbiome in the aetiopathogenesis of colorectal cancer. Alasdair was instrumental in establishing the International Cancer Microbiome Consortium, a collaborative research network with the aim of promoting teaching and research in the relationship between the microbiome and cancer.
- The interaction between the microbiome and outcomes following colorectal cancer. In particular, Alasdair is intersted in the relationship between the gut microbiome and the development of anastomotic leak following bowel researction.
- Digital health. Alasdair is one of the founding members of PanSurg, a global eHub for surgeons and other healthcare professionals created to foster learning and research in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was the lead web developer and managed operations.
- Biomarkers of colorectal disease. Alasdair is interested in the use of traditional and novel 'omics technologies in the diagnosis and prognostication of benign and maligant colorectal disease.
