Summary

Alexander (Sacha) Harris joined Imperial College School of Medicine in the year 2000, graduating in 2006 with MBBS and 1st Class Honours in his intercalated BSc. He subsequently completed his Foundation Training with the North West Thames Foundation School (2006-2008) before joining the Oxford School of Surgery (2008-2010) where he gained the MRCS (Eng) and completed his Core Surgical Training.

Sacha's interest in academia led to him completing a part-time Masters degree in Surgical Technology at Imperial College London during his Core Surgical Training (2008-2010). His dissertation was on Distributed Simulation in Surgical Training, for which he gained a Merit.

Sacha was subsequently invited to join the Department of Surgery and Cancer as a Clinical Research Fellow in August 2010 and completed his PhD under the supervision of Professors Roger Kneebone, Fernando Bello and George Hanna at St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington. His thesis was titled Surgical Expertise in Gastric and Oesophageal Cancer Surgery. During his research, Sacha undertook a Live Science research project at the Science Museum in London, and Travelling Fellowships to Japan and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA.

Sacha completed his Higher Surgical Training on the NW London circuit, during which time he was a training representative with a seat on the STC. He rotated through UGI surgery posts at St Mary's Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, and the Royal Marsden Hospital (2014-2021). He was subsequently appointed RCS England Post CCT Senior Clinical Fellow at Imperial (2021-2022), during which time he received the Alex Simpson Smith Travelling Fellowship to visit Amsterdam UMC.

Sacha was appointed as a substantive consultant surgeon at BHRUT in April 2022, where his career interest remains UGI cancer and complex benign UGI conditions. He is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, where he continues to pursue his academic interests in surgical quality assurance, as well as surgical simulation and education.
