Summary

Dr Antonio de Marvao is a MRC Chain-Florey Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology at the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences and a senior fellow in Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals.

Antonio graduated from the University of Glasgow with 1st Class Honours in 2007 and went on to complete his Foundation training in Scotland. In 2009 he moved to London, where he undertook his core medical training across Hammersmith, Charing Cross and St. Mary’s hospitals. That same year he was awarded the MRCP diploma. He was appointed to specialist training in Cardiology in 2011, before being awarded a Chain-Florey Clinical Research Fellowship to undertake a PhD at the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences under the supervision of Professor Stuart Cook and Professor Declan O'Regan.

In 2016, he was awarded a PhD for his research focusing on mathematical modelling of the heart, using cardiovascular MRI and artificial intelligence techniques, to understand the genetic and physiological mechanisms that underpin cardiovascular disease. He has received national and international awards for his work using artificial intelligence algorithms for medical imaging analysis, computer assisted diagnosis and outcome prediction. These have been applied in the study of hypertensive heart disease, heart failure, aortic stenosis, pulmonary hypertension and inherited cardiac conditions.

His work has been supported by the Medical Research Council, National Institute for Health Research, British Heart Foundation, Mason Medical Research Foundation and the Academy of Medical Sciences.

He was appointed as a Chain-Florey Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology in 2016. He works closely with Professor Declan O'Regan's Computational Cardiac Imaging group and with Dr James Ware's Cardiovascular Genomics and Precision Medicine group.

Clinically, Antonio is specialising in the care of patients with Inherited Cardiac Conditions, maternal cardiology and in advanced cardiac MR. His interest in health economics led him to complete an MBA at the Imperial College London Business School in 2017. He is a trainee representative to the board of  the British Society of Cardiac MR and sits in the British Junior Cardiologists' Association Council. He is also a medical director for the Resuscitation Council  (UK) advanced life support (ALS) course.
