Summary

Professor Beata Wojciak-Stothard leads a research group studying molecular processes influencing pulmonary endothelial homeostasis. Her group utilise data from proteomic, genomic and metabolomic screening of patient samples to identify signalling mediators linked to endothelial dysfunction in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

Employing novel experimental approaches including organ-on-a-chip platforms, she aims to develop new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of this disease.

Projects within the group focus on three main areas:

  • Rho and Arf GTPases in pulmonary vascular remodelling
  • endothelium-protective effects of flow
  • modelling disease in the organ-on-a-chip platform

Following completion of her PhD in 1992 at the Jagiellonian University, Cracow, Poland, Beata Wojciak-Stothard held post-doctoral positions at both Glasgow University and University College London. Between 2000 and 2009, she carried out independent research at University College London funded by the British Heart Foundation, holding the positions of British Heart Foundation Intermediate Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow, and Honorary Lecturer. In September 2009, Dr Wojciak-Stothard joined the Department of Experimental Medicine and Toxicology and then the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, where she held positions of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor in Vascular Biology.

Dr. Wojciak-Stothard's research has garnered significant funding support from BBSRC/NC3R, MRC, and industrial partners. In addition to her research activities, Dr. Wojciak-Stothard undertakes several key administrative roles. She serves as the co-Lead for Athena Swan/Equality Diversity and Inclusion, Deputy Head of the Section of Vascular Sciences, a member of the Higher Degrees and Research Committee (HDRC), Postgraduate Research Tutor, Personal Tutor, Post-Doc Champion, and Academic Mentor.

Furthermore, she contributes to the field as a member of the Editorial Board of Vascular Pharmacology and as an expert reviewer for program and project grants, offering her expertise to organizations such as the French National Research Agency, Austrian Science Fund, Polish Executive Government Agency of National Science Centre, Dutch Research Council, British Heart Foundation (BHF), BBSRC, and NC3Rs in the United Kingdom. Notably, she was a member of the International Review Panel for the German Centre for Lung Research and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research from 2009 to 2013.

Beata Wojciak-Stothard is a Fellow of the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute (PVRI) and a  member of the European Vascular Biology Organization (EVBO), where she served on the EVBO Council from 2017 to 2021. Additionally, she is affiliated with On-A-Chip Technologies UK, the European Organ-On-A-Chip Society, and the American Thoracic Society.

She actively organizes and delivers presentations at national and international conferences and workshops, further contributing to the dissemination of knowledge in her field.
