Peltier B, Atkinson C, 1987, DYNAMIC PORE PRESSURE AHEAD OF THE BIT., SPE Drilling Engineering, Vol: 2, Pages: 351-358, ISSN: 0885-9744
An analytic approach is presented in an attempt to improve the understanding of the mechanism of pore-pressure invasion ahead of the bit during drilling. An axisymmetric model accounts for a zone of damaged permeability (skin) on the work front. The effect of rate of penetration (ROP) and rotation speed on the pore pressure at the depth of cut is significant in the lower range of permeabilities, while for the high permeabilities, the skin has an overwhelming control on the pressure invasion.

Peltier B, Atkinson C, 1986, DYNAMIC PORE PRESSURE AHEAD OF THE BIT.
This paper shows that the pore pressure ahead of the bit is dynamically controlled in almost the entire range of drilling conditions. A simple expression has been derived which accounts for the most influential phenomena. The direct rotation speed effect was modeled for the planar case. Skin transmissibility is considered constant although it is known from experimental results that it does vary with the flux of filtrate across the work-front, rate of penetration, rotation speed, jetting, rock characteristics (pore size and permeability) and mud properties (particles size distribution, filtrate viscosity).

Atkinson C, 1985, INVARIANT INTEGRALS FOR SOME TIME DEPENDENT CRACK AND HEAT CONDUCTION PROBLEMS., Pages: 203-216
A formalism based on the energy momentum tensor is used to derive invariant integrals for steady state crack propagation, dynamically similar expanding cracks and other dynamically similar anti-plane strain problems. Invariant integrals of the 'reciprocal equation' type are also given for dynamically similar elasticity and certain heat conduction problems. It is suggested that these integrals can be useful as ancillary tools for special stress analysis problems.

Atkinson C, 1984, FRACTURE MECHANICS STRESS ANALYSIS I (BIE FOR CRACK TIP STRESS ANALYSIS)., Pages: 355-376, ISSN: 0168-132X
The Chapter begins with a brief recap of the standard boundary integral equation (B. I. E. ) formulation for elastotatics and outlines the difficulty with direct modelling of cracks by B. I. E. It then briefly reviews fracture mechanics terminology, and various integral equation formulations are discussed. Subjects covered include stress intensity factors, crack tip stress analysis, crack geometry, and others. Refs.
Atkinson C, 1984, FRACTURE MECHANICS STRESS ANALYSIS II (AUXILIARY RESULTS; A NUMERICAL EXAMPLE, AND PROBLEMS OF DEBOND STRESS ANALYSIS)., Pages: 377-397, ISSN: 0168-132X
Different methods for stress singularity modelling will be outlined and compared on a model problem, that of a crack under longitudinal shear (anti-plane strain) where the governing equation is Laplace's equation. Invariant integrals are described which can be useful in deducing values of stress intensity factors from numerical information far from the crack tip. The Chapter also describes a problem of debond stress analysis and indicates how the methods outlined, together with other analytic information, in certain cases could be used to give an accurate description of a debonding event. Atkinson C, 1983, FRACTURE MECHANICS STRESS ANALYSIS., Progress in Boundary Element Methods, Vol: 2, Pages: 53-100
The boundary integral equations (BIE) method is discussed with particular reference to its application to fracture mechanics stress analysis. Although the BIE method has been used to treat a variety of boundary value problems, those encountered in fracture mechanics possess certain unique features which require special treatment. There are essentially two distinct difficulties which are encountered when applying standard BIE procedures to fracture models in which a crack is modeled as having a planform of zero thickness (e. g. , a line crack in two dimensions).

Debonding of a rigid rod from a compressible elastic matrix is considered. A simple model for the initiation of debond fracture is given and comparisons between this simple model and an exact analysis is made.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE GROWTH CHARACTERISTICS OF A TRAIN OF LEDGES IS PRESENTED, WHERE VOLUME DIFFUSION IN THE PARENT PHASEIS ASSUMED TO BE THE RATE-CONTROLLING FACTOR. FIRST A TRAINOF STEPS OF UNEQUAL HEIGHT IS CONSIDERED WHERE THE STEP HEIGHTS ARE ASSUMED TO BE CONSISTENT WITH A STEADY-STATE MOTIONSO THAT EACH STEP MOVES WITH THE SAME SPEED. IT IS POSSIBLETO ANALYZE THE SITUATION BY ASYMPTOTIC METHODS WHEN THE STEPS ARE EITHER FAR APART OR CLOSE TOGETHER.
