Dr Katie Francis (nee Fletcher) undertook her first degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, where she was awarded the St John's College Prize and the St John's College USC scholarship. She gained upper second class honours. She went on to study Medicine as a graduate-entry student at the University of Oxford, gaining the Hobson-Mann Memorial Scholarship and the Domus Merit Award.

After completing an academic F2 programme in Cardiology in Oxford, she has worked as a Cardiology SpR for 3 years in leading academic Cardiology centres in London, continuing her interest in structural and congenital heart disease. She has also maintained a strong interest in teaching and education, having been appointed as a Teaching Fellow at Green College Oxford, and also having worked as a GMC trainee Partner focussing on the Royal Colleges' assessment systems.

She was appointed to a BRU clinical fellowship in 2012, with which she joined the groups of Professor John Pepper and Professor Jane Mitchell.  Her PhD project is using novel techniques in bioinformatics and cell culture to study vascular biology in health and in bicuspid aortic valve disease.
