Expertise: carbohydrate analytical chemistry

Colin Herbert obtained a BSc in Chemistry and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Salford. As a post doc in the Chemistry Department of the now London Metropolitan University, he developed a passion for mass spectrometry. Colin held postdoctoral positions at the Royal Society Research Unit at University College of Swansea, working with Prof. J. H. Beynon FRS, and thereafter in industry while using his knowledge and experience of gas-phase ion chemistry and physics.

He joined the Glycosciences Laboratory at the Clinical Research Centre at Northwick Park in 1995, initially working in the mass spectrometry laboratory, and later diversifying into bench chemistry and the preparation, purification and analyses of oligosaccharides, glycolipids and neoglycolipids. He also maintains databases of oligosaccharides and various other glyco materials in the group.
