Cathy Mulligan is the European Research Area Chair (Professor) in Blockchain at the University of Lisbon, where she leads the Blockchain Lab dedicated to research in Blockchain for Social Good and Sustainability. Cathy is an interdisciplinary researcher focusing on Digital technologies and Digital transformation from the perspectives of Computer Science and Economics. Cathy has advised multiple governments, companies, and NGOs on Digital Transformation & Cryptocurrency / Blockchain.
Cathy is a Fellow of the World Economic Forum and was a member of the United Nations Secretary General’s High Level Panel on Digital Cooperation during 2019 Cathy has her PhD (Econ) and her MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development from the University of Cambridge. Cathy has also had numerous corporate positions, advisory and Non Exec roles including CTO for a consulting company with a technical team of 14,000 over North and West Europe.
Her research interests lie in the area of new economic structures enabled by the digital economy, in particular the role of cybersecurity and Distributed Ledger Technologies in the creation of trust in digitally-enabled industries, governments and in the creation of citizen-centric smart/sustainable cities.
Catherine has held £5.1 million of grants within the Digital Economy Framework and she co-founded the Imperial College Centre for Cryptocurrency Research and Engineering – the world’s first academic centre on cryptocurrency and blockchain.
Catherine has published several books, with topics ranging from mobile technologies to the evolution of innovation within the communications industries from 1960 through 2010.
Until December 2017, Cathy served as standardisation lead for the Open and Agile Smart Cities (OASC) Task Force and Vice Chairman of the ETSI ISG on Context Information Management. She was also a Visiting Fellow at the Glasgow School of Art Institute for Design Innovation (INDI)
