Dimitriadis VD, Shah N, Pantelides CC, 1996, Optimal design of hybrid controllers for hybrid process systems, Pages: 244-257, ISSN: 0302-9743

The design of controllers for processing systems has mostly concentrated on the purely continuous and purely discrete cases. However, most chemical processes exhibit hybrid characteristics. This work presents a model-based approach to the controller synthesis problem for hybrid processing systems. A parameterised representation for hybrid controllers is presented that generalises the purely discrete and purely continuous cases. A discrete/continuous mathematical model of the process and the control system is constructed. Then, the mathematical formulations of the control system design and performance verification problems are introduced. The former can be used to design a controller that behaves optimally with respect to a given finite set of disturbance scenarios. The latter, given a controller, determines: worst-case disturbance inputs that render the system infeasible or suboptimal. The two problems are finally combined into a two-stage, iterative design algorithm. A simple example is used to illustrate the potential of the proposed approach.

Smith EMB, Pantelides CC, 1995, Design of reaction/separation networks using detailed models, Pages: 83-88, ISSN: 0098-1354

This paper considers the design of integrated processes for the conversion of a set of raw materials to a set of end products utilising a given set of reaction and separation unit operations. It advocates the use of detailed unit operation models to ensure the practical realisability and optimality of the derived designs. It also demonstrates that, provided the models fulfil a certain condition, the number of discrete alternatives that need to be considered is relatively small. An example of the application of the method to the design of an ethylbenzene production process is presented. © 1995.

Charalambides MS, Shah N, Pantelides CC, 1995, Synthesis of batch reaction/distillation processes using detailed dynamic models, Pages: 167-174, ISSN: 0098-1354

This paper considers the synthesis of processes comprising batch reaction and distillation tasks. Complex process features, such as material recycles and shared intermediates are taken into account. The problem is formulated as a multistage optimal control problem. A control vector parametrisation approach is utilised to reduce this infinite dimensional dynamic problem to a finite dimensional nonlinear programming problem. An example involving an exothermic reaction step followed by a batch distillation is presented to illustrate the proposed approach. © 1995.

This paper is concerned with the design and implementation of an integrated software package for the optimisation of general multipurpose batch and semi-continuous plants. In particular, we describe a sophisticated graphical user interface that supports the rapid specification of scheduling, planning, design and retrofit problems in an error-free manner. These problems are posed graphically and solved under a unified framework based on the state-task network process representation and a general characterisation of all production resources, such as processing and storage equipment, utilities and manpower. This representation facilitates the specification of processing recipes of arbitrary complexity, involving material recycles, shared intermediates, batch splitting and mixing and multiple routes to the same end-product. The architecture employed shields the users from the complex mathematical models and solution procedures that are employed, freeing up their time for problem specification and results analysis. © 1995.

Wilkinson SJ, Shah N, Pantelides CC, 1995, Aggregate modelling of multipurpose plant operation, Pages: 583-588, ISSN: 0098-1354

This paper is concerned with a method for producing accurate aggregate models of multipurpose plant operation. An aggregate formulation is generated automatically from a detailed discrete-time formulation and represents a strict relaxation of it. The aggregate formulation can be solved in considerably less computational time and often gives a tight upper bound on the solution to the original formulation. An example is presented and potential applications of this approach are discussed. © 1995.
