This paper describes an innovative program to enhance access to the Bachelor of Nursing (BN) in theform of a nursing entrance test (NET). Discussion will focus on the NET as the meansfor enhancing access and retention. The results of a recent evaluation of the NET are discussed and used to demonstrate that the NET is an effective tool for the provision of access and retention in the Bachelor of Nursing for students who do not meet standard entry criteria.

Webb CM, Ghatei MA, McNeill JG, et al., 2000, 17β-Estradiol decreases endothelin-1 levels in the coronary circulation of postmenopausal women with coronary artery disease, Circulation, Vol: 102, Pages: 1617-1622, ISSN: 0009-7322
Background - Estrogen reverses acetylcholine-induced coronary vasoconstriction via the possible facilitation of endothelium-derived NO. Estrogen also affects endothelium-derived constrictor factors. We therefore investigated the effects of 17β-estradiol on coronary vasomotor responses to substance P (SP), and coronary sinus endothelin-1 and NO metabolite levels in postmenopausal women with coronary heart disease. Methods and Results - We studied 20 women; 14 received estrogen (mean age 65±2 years) and 6 served as ethanol control subjects (age 63±3 years). Intracoronary infusions of papaverine (8 mg) and SP were administered before and 20 minutes after 50 pg/min 17β-estradiol or 0.2 μL/min control. Coronary blood flow was calculated from the diameter, as measured with quantitative coronary angiography, and flow velocity, as measured with intracoronary Doppler. Coronary sinus plasma endothelin-1 and nitrite/nitrate (NO2/NO3) were measured at baseline, at peak velocity response to each infusion, and every 5 minutes during the estradiol infusion. Endothelin-1 levels were decreased after 20 minutes of estradiol (1.12±0.18 versus 0.86±0.17 pmol/L baseline2 versus estradiol, P=0.05). Endothelin-1 levels to SP decreased after 17β-estradiol (1.29±0.18 versus 1.04±0.15 and 1.3±0.16 versus 0.99±0.17 pmol/L for before versus after estradiol, 10 and 25 pmol/min SP; both P<0.05). NO2/NO3 levels did not change. There was no change in vasomotor responses to estradiol alone or to papaverine or SP before versus after estradiol. Conclusions - Short-term intracoronary 17β-estradiol administration decreases coronary endothelino-1 levels. There was no enhancement of vasomotor responses to SP after the administration of estrogen, suggesting that the effects of estrogen on coronary acetylcholine responses may be a specific and not a generalized effect on coronary vasoreactivity.

English L, Bonanno H, Ihnatko T, et al., 1999, Learning through writing in a first-year accounting course, Journal of Accounting Education, Vol: 17, Pages: 221-254, ISSN: 0748-5751
More than any other activity at a university, the writing experiences of students are directly linked to their academic progress. This paper reports on the practical steps taken in restructuring the curriculum of a first-year accounting course at the University of Sydney to develop students' writing skills within a broader skills-based program to enhance learning. Three dimensions of students' writing skills are addressed: writing skills as prerequisites for learning, writing skills as a means of learning, and writing skills as an outcome of learning. The paper explains how the educational theory about learning to write and writing to learn contributed to a pedagogical framework for teaching practice and gives several examples as illustration of the pedagogy. Interactive reading guides, annotated model answers, analysis grids, and formative self and peer assessment are among techniques adopted to encourage students to reflect actively on their own learning through writing. The curriculum redesign project reported here was first introduced in 1994, and substantially modified in 1995 in response to feedback. In general, the quality of submitted assignments, examination performance, and feedback from both staff and students suggests that the innovations reported in the paper have helped students to improve their writing skills and enabled them to become more engaged with the learning of the content of the course. Quantitative feedback between 1994-1997 confirms these conclusions. © 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.
Holford P, Webb C, Maltroy J, et al., 1999, Enhancing the research competencies of horticulture graduates through improved communications skills, HortTechnology, Vol: 9, Pages: 267-272, ISSN: 1063-0198
Research Philosophy and Methodology (RPM) is a core course designed for postgraduate students studying horticulture at the University of Western Sydney Hawkesbury. This course has two aims. First, RPM introduces the different paradigms found within science to students, and develops their understanding of different approaches to problem solving and extending knowledge. Second, RPM encourages an exploration of different forms of expression used within science and provides students with opportunities to practice communicating their ideas through written and oral presentations. It is intended that students will complete this course with a deeper understanding of how science is conducted and communicated.
