Summary

Summary

Catriona is a Research Officer in Electron Microscopy in the Department of Materials, specialising in Advanced Electron Microscopy Techniques.  Her responsibilities include helping run the Harvey Flower Electron Microscopy Facility with specific responsibility for the FEI Titan 80-300 (S)TEM and high end equipment on the other microscopes.  She is involved in training students and staff on the instruments, lecturing on undergraduate and post graduate electron microscopy courses in addition to maintaining microscopy equipment.

Her area of expertise include high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning TEM (STEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), 3D electron tomography and cryo-preparation techniques, as well as developing and implementing new techniques for the facility.

Catriona is also involved in conducting research on specific projects and more broadly for the department as a whole.

Prior to her current role, Catriona achieved her PhD titled 'Nucleation and crystallisation of Hafnium compounds and thin films' from Imperial College London (2008) under the supervision of Prof. David W. McComb (Imperial) and Prof. Alan J. Craven (University of Glasgow), and obtained her undergraduate degree in Chemical Physics (MSci, 2004) at the University of Glasgow.
