Thomaz CE, Gillies D, 2001, “Small Sample Size”: a methodological problem in bayes plug-in classifier for image recognition, Departmental Technical Report: 01/6, Publisher: Department of Computing, Imperial College London, 01/6

New technologies in the form of improved instrumentation have made itpossible to take detailed measurements over recognition patterns. This increase in thenumber of features or parameters for each pattern of interest not necessarily generatesbetter classification performance. In fact, in problems where the number of trainingsamples is less than the number of parameters, i.e. “small sample size” problems, notall parameters can be estimated and traditional classifiers often used to analyse lowerdimensional data deteriorate. The Bayes plug-in classifier has been successfully appliedto discriminate high dimensional data. This classifier is based on similaritymeasures that involve the inverse of the sample group covariance matrices. However, these matrices are singular in “small sample size” problems. Thus, several othermethods of covariance estimation have been proposed where the sample group covarianceestimate is replaced by covariance matrices of various forms. In this report, some of these approaches are reviewed and a new covariance estimator is proposed. The new estimator does not require an optimisation procedure, but an eigenvectoreigenvalueordering process to select information from the projected sample groupcovariance matrices whenever possible and the pooled covariance otherwise. The effectivenessof the method is shown by some experimental results.

Timing recovery in the High Performance Radio Local Area Network (HIPERLAN) standard is likely to be performed with the aid of synchronisation sequences embedded in the user data, which will be detected with matched filters. A directed search using a form of genetic algorithm has been performed to obtain suitable sequences of lengths up to 80 bits, and simulations of their performance have been undertaken. Performance of the sequences has been measured under the severe channel conditions that pertain in the indoor environment.
