Bodin A, Gündüz D, 2014, Energy harvesting communication system with a finite set of transmission rates, Pages: 58-63
A point-to-point communication system in which the transmitter is equipped with an energy harvesting (EH) device and a rechargeable battery of limited size is considered. The harvested energy profile is assumed to be known in advance, that is, the problem is studied in the offline optimization framework. A practical communication system is considered, in which the possible transmission rates, and equivalently, power levels, belong to a finite set of discrete values. This problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem, which can be solved numerically. In order to provide further insights into the nature of the optimal transmission policy, an alternative solution is provided based on the solution of the continuous version of this problem, which itself has a "shortest path" interpretation. We propose an optimal algorithm, which permits us to easily build the solution of the discrete case from the continuous case, using an equivalence notion between different transmission policies, and several equivalence-preserving transformations.
Gomez-Vilardebo J, Gündüz D, 2014, Competitive analysis of energy harvesting wireless communication systems, Pages: 64-69
A competitive analysis for the online and offline optimization problems for a slotted energy harvesting (EH) wireless communication system is studied. The objective is to design online strategies that minimize the competitive rate gap that is defined as the maximum gap between the optimal rates that can be achieved by the offline and online policies over all possible energy arrival profiles. It is shown that the competitive rate gap is upper-bounded by the logarithm of the number of slots, and a myopic online transmission policy is proposed that achieves a lower rate gap.

This paper deals with the joint transmission of energy and information in multiuser systems, in particular, in a two-user symmetric interference channel. It is assumed that each receiver can be either in the information decoding (ID) mode, or in the energy harvesting (EH) mode at any time instant. In the ID mode, information-carrying signals from the other transmitter is considered as noise, while energy-carrying signals can be ignored owing to their known structure. In the EH mode, a receiver can harvest energy from the energy-carrying signal transmitted by its own transmitter as well as from the interfering signal from the other transmitter, be it an information or an energy-carrying signal; which is called interference harvesting. The transmission scheme is optimized in order to maximize the throughput while satisfying a constraint on the minimum amount of average harvested power by each receiver, which might model the power required by the receiver for processing and decoding the information-carrying signals. This problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem which can be efficiently solved, and provides insights on the optimal transmission scheme with the help of numerical simulations.

Smart meters are key elements for the operation of smart grids. By providing near realtime information on the energy consumption of individual users, smart meters increase the efficiency in generation, distribution and storage of energy in a smart grid. The ability of the utility provider to track users' energy consumption inevitably leads to important threats to privacy. In this paper, privacy in a smart metering system is studied from an information theoretic perspective in the presence of energy harvesting and storage units. It is shown that energy harvesting provides increased privacy by diversifying the energy source, while a storage device can be used to increase both the energy efficiency and the privacy of the user. For given input load and energy harvesting rates, it is shown that there exists a trade-off between the information leakage rate, which is used to measure the privacy of the user, and the wasted energy rate, which is a measure of the energy-efficiency. The impact of the energy harvesting rate and the size of the storage device on this trade-off is also studied.

A point-to-point wireless communication system in which the transmitter isequipped with an energy harvesting device and a rechargeable battery, isstudied. Both the energy and the data arrivals at the transmitter are modeledas Markov processes. Delay-limited communication is considered assuming thatthe underlying channel is block fading with memory, and the instantaneouschannel state information is available at both the transmitter and thereceiver. The expected total transmitted data during the transmitter'sactivation time is maximized under three different sets of assumptionsregarding the information available at the transmitter about the underlyingstochastic processes. A learning theoretic approach is introduced, which doesnot assume any a priori information on the Markov processes governing thecommunication system. In addition, online and offline optimization problems arestudied for the same setting. Full statistical knowledge and causal informationon the realizations of the underlying stochastic processes are assumed in theonline optimization problem, while the offline optimization problem assumesnon-causal knowledge of the realizations in advance. Comparing the optimalsolutions in all three frameworks, the performance loss due to the lack of thetransmitter's information regarding the behaviors of the underlying Markovprocesses is quantified.

Linear transmission of correlated L-dimensional Gaussian vector sources over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels is considered. For a static MIMO channel necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the optimality of zero-delay linear transmission in terms of average squared error distortion. Linear transmission is shown to be optimal when the transmission power constraint is below a threshold determined by the channel and the source parameters. Then, a fast fading MIMO channel is considered, and linear transmission is shown to achieve the optimal decay rate of the average distortion in the low SNR regime. In the high SNR regime, linear transmission is shown to achieve the optimal exponential decay rate of the expected distortion in certain settings. © VDE Verlag GMBH.
