This paper presents a new nonlinear analysis method for three-dimensional reinforced concrete (R/C) frames employing adaptive analysis concepts. The first two components of the proposed adaptive method, namely the elastic and elasto-plastic beam-column formulations, are described. The details of automatic mesh refinement, which is the third component of the adaptive method, are then presented. These include the construction of an effective interaction surface representing generalised stress states at the elastic limit, the determination and checking of generalised stresses for exceeding the elastic limit along an elastic element, and the refinement of an elastic element into an appropriate number of elastic and elasto-plastic elements. Examples are finally presented to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed analysis method. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The development of automated design assistants requires a generic framework in which design knowledge can be directly represented and utilized. The framework should be transparent, allowing a user to view and query the system's reasoning and to control its solution processes. Current knowledge‐based systems techniques have failed to provide such a framework because their inference procedures do not directly support design transformations. This paper describes the design and implementation of a generic framework for design based on planning. Issues addressed include the representation and use of strategic control knowledge, object‐level design knowledge, normative knowledge, and general knowledge within a planning framework. Examples of the functioning of the framework in the design of beams to satisfy lateral torsional buckling requirements are presented. The efficiency and limitations of the implementation are discussed and possible extensions to the system described. © 1995 Microcomputers in Civil Engineering

Abstract: This paper describes a plan‐based framework that can be configured for design in different domains. The case for design by planning is argued by examining the requirements of an adequate framework for design and showing how the planning approach satisfies the requirements. Using the plan‐based framework, the knowledge requirements of design, design transformations, multiagent design, learning, and creativity are explored. Multiagent design can be realized through delegated planning; and learning, through the chunking of successful design plans into summary plan operators. Routine design is shown to be equivalent to the reuse of stored design plans as summary plan operators; innovative design, to the combination and modification of previous plans; and creative design, to the automatic creation of new plan operators from domain axioms. An example of the conceptual/preliminary design of a light industrial building performed by a prototype plan‐based system is described. © 1995 Microcomputers in Civil Engineering
