Summary

David Hansell MD FRCP FRCR FRSM is Emeritus Professor of Thoracic Imaging at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London and was Consultant Radiologist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust from 1989 to 2017.  Professor Hansell qualified from Westminster Hospital Medical School and after training in general medicine he specialised in radiology and gained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in 1987. Prior to taking up his clinical appointment at Royal Brompton Hospital he was Visiting Assistant Professor at the Image Processing Laboratories, University of California, Los Angeles.

Professor Hansell has participated in numerous national and international working groups responsible for drawing up recommendations for the investigation and management of lung diseases, and projects have included a complete revision of the Fleischner Society’s glossary of terms used in thoracic imaging (2008). The main focus of his research has been the application of high resolution computed tomography to the characterization and quantification of diffuse lung diseases.  He has been a frequent speaker at international meetings, including the European Society of Thoracic Imaging, the Fleischner Society (USA) and the Society of Thoracic Radiology (USA).  He served as President of the Fleischner Society (2012) and the European Society of Thoracic Imaging (2005) and was on the organizing committee of the First World Congress of Thoracic Imaging, held in Florence in 2005.  He has been the co-organizer of numerous meetings since 1990, including the highly regarded triennial Cambridge Chest Meeting.

Professor Hansell coauthored an acclaimed textbook, Imaging of Diseases of the Chest, by Hansell, Lynch, McAdams and Bankier (Elsevier, 2010). He was Editor of Clinical Radiology (2002-2006) and was a member of the editorial boards of several European and North American journals. He is the author or coauthor of more than 350 papers listed on PubMed.  In 2013 he was given a Senior Investigator Award by the National Institute of Health Research.  As well as supervising higher degrees of UK research fellows, Professor Hansell has been host to visiting radiologists from Europe, North America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.  Since 1998 his fellows have won 31 prizes for work presented at European and North American scientific meetings 

In 2015 he was awarded the Royal College of Radiologist’s Gold Medal in recognition of his national and international contributions to clinical radiology.
