Palaniappan R, Mandic DP, Obradovic D, 2005, On decision making ability of subjects with long-term intoxicant consumption using single trial visual evoked potential signals, Pages: 413-416

We investigate the decision making ability of subjects with a history of long-term intoxicant (alcohol) consumption in relation to short-term visual memory using P3 amplitudes obtained from single trial visual evoked potential (VEP) signals. This is made possible by means of digital filtering and principal component analysis (PCA). The results show a significantly lower P3 amplitude for these subjects as compared to controls. This electroencephalogram based analysis conforms with the common knowledge that long-term alcohol use causes permanent and negative residual effects on decision making ability related to short-term visual memory. © 2005 IEEE.

Obradovic D, Szabo A, Mandic D, Chang Ret al., 2005, Novel EM-based method for channel estimation and signal detection in MIMO-OFDM systems, Pages: 1795-1798

This paper presents a novel method for channel estimation and signal detection In MEMO-OEDM systems based on the Expectation Maximization algorithm (EM). In contrast to standard pilot aided Interpolation methods, the estimation of the channel In a given frequency bin without pilot symbols Is posed as a Maximum Likelihood (ML) with missing observations and Is solved by the Iterative EM algorithm. As a semi-blind estimation method, EM Is Insensitive to permutation and scaling of transmitted signals. To avoid this uncertainty, the initialization of the iterative optimization for each frequency bin is achieved using the model of the neighboring bin, provided that these bins satisfy thus Introduced similarity condition. Hence, channel estimation Is performed sequentially over all bins starting from the bin for which Its model Is estimated with a pilot sequence. The proposed method Is tested successfully on MEMO-OFDM systems In realistic channel conditions. © 2005 IEEE.

Mandic DP, Obradovic D, Kuh A, 2005, A robust general normalised gradient descent algorithm, Pages: 133-136

A modification of the generalised normalised gradient descent (GNGD) algorithm is introduced which caters for the steady state performance of the algorithm. This is achieved by combining the search-then-converge and gradient adaptive step size approaches. This way, the proposed algorithm exhibits very fast convergence and small steady state error. Simulations on linear and nonlinear signals in prediction setting support the analysis. © 2005 IEEE.
