Overby D, Johnson M, 2000, Stereological corrections of quantitative morphology, Annals of Biomedical Engineering, Vol: 28, ISSN: 0090-6964

A collection of non-overlapping, convex objects that were randomly distributed in a space was considered. A theory was developed that relates the porosity and surface area/unit volume to the parameters measured on the 2D projected image. A numerical model of non-overlapping spheres randomly placed in a 3D space was also developed.

Johnson M, Overby D, Ruberti J, Freddo TF, Gong Het al., 1999, Hydrodynamics of aqueous humor outflow, ISSN: 0589-1019

We present a hydrodynamic model of the aqueous outflow pathway that can, for the first time, account for the generation of outflow resistance based upon anatomical measurements. The hydraulic conductivity of the extracellular matrix in the juxtacanalicular connective tissue (JCT) is determined by combining advanced morphometric techniques with electron microscopy images taken using quick-freeze/deep-etch to preserve ultrastructural detail. A hydrodynamic interaction between pores of the endothelium of Schlemm's canal, breaks in the basement membrane, and this morphometrically-determined hydraulic conductivity lead to predictions that are consistent with experimentally-measured outflow resistances.
