Summary

Edward is a teacher of English for Academic Purposes (EAP), specialising in STEMM communication at the Centre for Academic English (CfAE). He joined the CfAE full-time in July 2022, having previously worked on the six-week and three-week pre-sessional courses. He teaches on a wide range of courses in the Centre that focus on writing and speaking in STEMM environments, and is particularly interested in developing training resources that build confidence and spontaneity in speaking. He has previously worked as a General English teacher in both the United Kingdom and Poland.

Edward’s academic background lies in science and technology studies (STS) and science communication, having previously studied English and history of science. He completed his PhD at University College London in 2020, entitled ‘A scientist walks into a bar: exploring science communication through science comedy’, which examined contemporary science communication work and training in the UK, with a specific focus on the use of comedy and stand-up as tools for training scientists to communicate effectively. While completing his PhD, he had a wide teaching portfolio on courses for natural sciences students, including 'Science Communication and Public Engagement', 'Science and Film Production', and 'Science and Religion'. He was also the course lead for the undergraduate module ‘Sociology of Science and Technology’.

Edward’s primary research interests focus on science and technology in popular culture (particularly comedy), scientific discourses and narratives, and contemporary professional science communication and public engagement work. These interests inform his teaching as he is interested in opportunities to incorporate ‘big picture’ thinking into STEMM communication by exploring the purpose of STEMM communication in public.
