Efstratios (Stratis for short) Batzelis has been an “Engineering for Development” Research Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) at the Electrical & Electronic Engineering department since November 2019. Being an expert in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and bridging the disciplines of power electronics and power systems, he is currently working on the technical challenges of solar integration in developing countries. His research focuses on modelling and control aspects of PV systems and microgrids, aiming at “grid-friendly” and resilient operation.

Prior to this appointment, Stratis held a 2-year EU Marie-Curie individual fellowship on “Photovoltaic Control & Integration”, and before that he was a Research Associate for 1 year working on the “JUICE – Joint UK-India Clean Energy Centre” consortium, both at the same department. He obtained his PhD degree at National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece in 2016.

Stratis is an experienced researcher with many IEEE publications, a funding track record of more than £1 million and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He is an advocate of sustainable engineering and the fight against climate change. His research interests involve renewable energy technologies and distributed energy resources, mainly solar photovoltaics, power electronics control and power system stability.
