In 2009 the WOSP (WOrms in SPace) experiment will be performed in the European Modular Cultivation System (EMCS) onboard the International Space Station (ISS) to study the effect of microgravity on the spatial arrangement of cytoskeletal components of a free living nematode, Panagrolaimus rigidus (Rhabditida). Five subsequent generations will occur in EMCS and development, morphology and fitness of the different generations will be studied. In preparation to the experiment, the response of P. rigidus to microgravity was investigated by checking its capacity to feed and to reproduce under simulated microgravity as realized in a Random Positioning Machine (RPM). Embryo development under different conditions was also studied and embryos at various stages of development were documented at light and confocal laser microscopy.
