Summary
Emma is the Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience) and a Professor of Statistics in the Mathematics Department at Imperial College London. She is responsible for facilitating and supporting the provision of high-quality education and delivering an exceptional student experience at Imperial.
Emma has an interest in education more generally and is a member of the Royal Society’s Advisory Committee for Mathematics Education (ACME). She has acted as a mathematics subject expert for Department of Education discussions on the reform of the Key Stage 4 qualifications and the Key Stage 3/4 National Curriculum in England. She is involved in many outreach activities; she has delivered the London Mathematical Society (LMS) popular lecture and is a regular speaker at the Royal Institution’s Mathematics Masterclasses and public engagement of science events including Ada Lovelace Day and the Potteries Science Festival. Emma is committed to access to education for students from all backgrounds and chairs the admissions and curriculum group of the new Imperial College London Mathematics School, a specialist school for sixth form students doing mathematics and further mathematics, alongside a range of other subjects, which will focus on attracting more students from disadvantaged and under-represented communities. She is also the Diversity Executive Sponsor for Imperial As One, which works to support and promote an inclusive workplace culture of respect, opportunity, unity, transparency, and equality.
Her current research interests are in developing time-series, wavelet, and propensity score methodology for robust estimation of continuous treatment effects, particularly in a transport setting. She is leading the grand challenge associated with monitoring complex systems as part of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation/Alan Turing Institute Data-Centric Engineering Programme. Emma is interested in the use of statistics in policy and social science settings and is a member of the Metropolitan Police Research Ethics committee.
She is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) where she is a member of the RSS Council, the Academic Affairs Advisory Group, and the Special Interest Group in Teaching Statistics. She regularly represents the RSS at CMS (Council of Mathematical Sciences), University UK, and EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Council) meetings. She was also a member of the Royal Society’s steering group on the Dynamics of Data Science
