Summary

Dr. Orihuela-Espina obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Birmingham (UK) in 2005 under the supervison of Prof. Ela Claridge. Afterwards, he moved to Mexico where he was appointed lecturer at the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico (UAEMex). He joined Imperial College as a research associate in 2007 working under the supervision of Prof. Lord Darzi and Prof. Guang-Zhong Yang. He continues collaborating with fellow researchers at the Hamlyn Center for Robotic Surgery. In 2011 he joined the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) in Mexico as a research associate to Prof. Enrique Sucar. Since 2012 he is a senior lecturer at the division of Computational Sciences at INAOE as well as an honorary lecturer at the Dept. of Cancer and Surgery at Imperial College.

His principal resarch interests are in the fields of :

  • Data analysis and understanding (statistics, machine learning, topology, etc)
  • Neuroimaging and specially functional Near InfraRed Spectroscopy (fNIRS)
  • Surgical neuroergonomics
  • Virtual Rehabilitation

As member of the Visual Information Processing (VIP) research group at Imperial, Dr. Orihuela-Espina collaborates with clinicians and engineers to advance in the understanding of the surgeon's learning process as well as assessing their neuroergonomics and classical ergonomics requirements during robotic and minimally invasive surgery.

As member of the Biosignal Processing and Medical Computing Lab at INAOE, Dr. Orihuela-Espina closely collaborates with clinicians and engineers to afford better analysis tools for fNIRS neuroimages as well as improving our knowledge of how virtual rehabilitation can deliver optimal therapies to patients of motor impairment by better understanding functional reorganization in the brain.
