The inductance of imploding cylindrical wire array z-pinches has been determined frommeasurements of load voltage and current. A thorough analysis method is presented that explainshow the load voltage of interest is found from raw signals obtained using a resistive voltagedivider. This method is applied to voltage data obtained during z-pinch experiments carried out onthe MAGPIE facility (1.4 MA, 240 ns rise-time) in order to calculate the load inductance andthereafter the radial trajectory of the effective current sheath during the snowplough implosion.Voltage and current are monitored very close to the load, allowing these calculations to be carriedout without the need for circuit modelling. Measurements give a convergence ratio for the currentof between 3.1 and 5.7 at stagnation of the pinch.

Hall GN, Lebedev SV, Suzuki Vidal F, et al., 2013, Ablation dynamics in coiled wire-array Z-pinches, Physics of Plasmas, Vol: 20, ISSN: 1089-7674
Experiments to study the ablation dynamics of coiled wire arrays were performed on the MAGPIEgenerator (1 MA, 240 ns) at Imperial College, and on the COBRA generator at Cornell University’sLaboratory of Plasma Studies (1 MA, 100 ns). The MAGPIE generator was used to drive coiled wiresin an inverse array configuration to study the distribution of ablated plasma. Using interferometry tostudy the plasma distribution during the ablation phase, absolute quantitative measurements ofelectron line density demonstrated very high density contrasts between coiled ablation streams andinter-stream regions many millimetres from the wire. The measured density contrasts for a coiledarray were many times greater than that observed for a conventional array with straight wires, indicating that a much greater axial modulation of the ablated plasma may be responsible for theunique implosion dynamics of coiled arrays. Experiments on the COBRA generator were used tostudy the complex redirection of plasma around a coiled wire that gives rise to the ablation structureexhibited by coiled arrays. Observations of this complex 3D plasma structure were used to validatethe current model of coiled array ablation dynamics [Hall et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 065003(2008)], demonstrating irrefutably that plasma flow from the wires behaves as predicted. Coiled wireswere observed to ablate and implode in the same manner on both machines, indicating that currentrise time should not be an issue for the scaling of coiled arrays to larger machines with fast currentrise times.

The aim of this work is to model the jets produced by conical wire arrays on the MAGPIE generator, and to design and test new setups to strengthen the link between laboratory and astrophysical jets. We performed the modelling with direct three-dimensional magneto-hydro-dynamic numerical simulations using the code GORGON. We applied our code to the typical MAGPIE setup and we successfully reproduced the experiments. We found that a minimum resolution of ∼100 μm is required to retrieve the unstable character of the jet. We investigated the effect of changing the number of wires and found that arrays with less wires produce more unstable jets, and that this effect has magnetic origin. Finally, we studied the behaviour of the conical array together with a conical shield on top of it to reduce the presence of unwanted low density plasma flows. The resulting jet is shorter and less dense.

We present experimental results on the formationof supersonic, radiatively cooled jets driven by pressuredue to the toroidal magnetic field generated by the 1.5 MA,250 ns current from the MAGPIE generator. The morphologyof the jet produced in the experiments is relevant toastrophysical jet scenarios in which a jet on the axis of amagnetic cavity is collimated by a toroidal magnetic fieldas it expands into the ambient medium. The jets in the experimentshave similar Mach number, plasma beta and coolingparameter to those in protostellar jets. Additionally theReynolds, magnetic Reynolds and Peclet numbers are muchlarger than unity, allowing the experiments to be scaled toastrophysical flows. The experimental configuration allowsfor the generation of episodic magnetic cavities, suggestingthat periodic fluctuations near the source may be responsiblefor some of the variability observed in astrophysical jets.Preliminary measurements of kinetic, magnetic and Poyntingenergy of the jets in our experiments are presented and discussed, together with estimates of their temperature andtrapped toroidal magnetic field.

Highly supersonic radiatively cooled plasma jets are produced by introducing a 1-MA 250-ns current pulse from the MAGPIE generator into a radial foil. The setup allows for the introduction of a neutral gas above the foil, in order to study the jet-ambient interaction. The dynamics are characterized by the formation of several shock features, which are imaged using laser interferometry. This diagnostic also allows to measure the electron density of the plasma, and examples of such results are presented here.
