AB - <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:sec><jats:title>Background and Aims</jats:title><jats:p>Digital interventions are effective for reducing alcohol consumption but evidence is limited regarding smartphone apps. <jats:italic>Drink Less</jats:italic> is a theory- and evidence-informed app to help people reduce their alcohol consumption that has been refined in terms of its content and design for usability across the socio-demographic spectrum. We aim to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of recommending <jats:italic>Drink Less</jats:italic> at reducing alcohol consumption compared with usual digital care.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Design</jats:title><jats:p>Two-arm individually randomised controlled trial.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Setting</jats:title><jats:p>Online trial in the UK.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Participants</jats:title><jats:p>Hazardous or harmful drinkers (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test score >=8) aged 18+, and want to drink less alcohol (n=5,562). Participants will be recruited from July 2020 to May 2022 using multiple strategies with a focus on remote digital methods.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Intervention and comparator</jats:title><jats:p>Participants will be randomised to receive either an email recommending that they use <jats:italic>Drink Less</jats:italic> (intervention) or view the NHS webpage on alcohol advice (comparator).</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Measurements</jats:title><jats:p>The primary outcome is change in self-reported weekly alcohol consumption between baseline and 6-month follow-up.
