Dr Fiona Walport is a Research Associate working in the Steel Structures Research Group at Imperial College London. Her research focuses on the design and analysis of steel and stainless steel structures by advanced inelastic analysis. Fiona obtained her PhD in structural engineering from Imperial College London in 2020 under the supervision of Profs. Leroy Gardner and David Nethercot. She obtained her MEng degree (first class honours) from Imperial College London in 2016.
During her studies, Fiona was awarded an Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) QUEST scholarship in 2012, a Royal Academy of Engineering Advanced Leadership Award in 2014, and in 2016, the Robert Bird Group Structural Engineering prize and an Imperial College London President’s Scholarship Award to undertake a PhD. More recently she was awarded 2nd place in the oral category at the 2019 Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Young Researchers’ Conference, an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship in 2020 and was awarded Best Paper by a Young Researcher at the Eurosteel 2021 Conference .
Fiona has co-supervised a number of undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects, and has peer reviewed submissions for technical journals and industry publications. She is a graduate member of the ICE and IStructE, a STEM Ambassador and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2021 - Fellowship reference PR232295).
