Summary

Dr Fernando Madrazo-Aguirre is a Visiting Design Fellow in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is an Associate (CEng MICE) in COWI designing and assessing bridges and special structures.

Fernando obtained his MEng in Civil Engineering (Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos) and MSc in Spain. He worked in a Spanish consultancy designing all type of structures before moving to London to pursue a PhD in Structural Engineering. His research focused on the design and behaviour of under-deck cable-stayed bridges, and was awarded the Graduate Teaching Assistant of the year in 2014. After graduation, he worked as a post-doc in the Department before joining the London branch of COWI (formerly Flint&Neill) in 2016.

He joined the College as a Visiting Design Fellow in 2017 to bring industry experience within the Design Thread. At the moment, he is involved in teaching the undergraduate module Sketching and Modelling and tutoring the MSc Bridge Design Projects. His research interests include bridges, lightweight structures and innovative structural forms. He is an active member of IABSE and IStructE.
