AB - Inanefforttolimitglobaltemperaturerisetowellbelow2C,theCOP21ParisAgreementstipulatesthata‘balance’betweenanthropogenic(man-made)sourcesandsinksofgreenhousegasesmustbereachedby2050-2100.Anoverallgreenhousegas‘balance’mustconsiderindividualgasesintermsofhowstronglytheyabsorbsolarinfraredradiation,theirconcentrationintheatmosphere,andtheirlifetimeintheatmosphere.•Long-livedgreenhousegases,includingcarbondioxide(CO2),accumulateintheatmosphereandcontinuetoaffecttheclimateformanycenturies.Tostabilisetheconcentrationsoftheselong-livedgases,andtherebytheireffectontheclimate,theirsourcesmustbeprogressivelyreducedtowardszero.•Forshort-livedgreenhousegasesthatremainintheatmosphereforlessthan100years,includingmethane,stableordecreasingconcentrationscouldbeachievedwithindecadesifemissionswerestabilisedordecreased.However,thesegasescurrentlyonlycontributeabout20%ofthetotalwarmingfromgreenhousegases,sotheirreductionalonecannotsuccessfullystabiliseglobaltemperature.•Anoverall‘balance’ofsourcesandsinksofgreenhousegasescouldbefacilitatedbydeliberateremovalofCO2fromtheatmosphere,forexample,bycombiningbiomassenergyproductionwithcarboncaptureandstorage.Mostcurrentgreenhousegasemissionscenariosthatkeepglobaltemperaturerisebelow2CincludesomedeliberateremovalofCO2tocompensateforcontinuedemissionsofCO2andothergreenhousegases
