Summary

Dr Huw Woodward is a Research Associate at the Centre for Environmental Policy. His research interests span from fundamental research of pollution dispersion, traffic emissions, passive pollution control measures and pedestrian exposure to national-scale emission estimates, abatement strategies and policy-orientated outputs focused on population health, the impact on sensitive ecosystems and economic costs. As of the summer of 2020 his work also includes understanding and modelling the risk of viral transmission in indoor environments.

Huw’s policy-orientated work includes work for DEFRA using the UK Integrated Assessment Model (UKIAM) to identify effective pollution mitigation measures in support of the government’s Environment Bill. He leads the unit’s work on assessing the impact of UK emissions on sensitive habitats, with a particular focus on nitrogen deposition and ammonia concentrations.

As a member of the MAGIC project Huw’s focus is on microscale dispersion modelling, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the effect of features such as traffic induced turbulence, trees and roof geometry on the dispersion of pollutants within urban areas.

Huw also works on the TRACK project investigating the risk of airborne viral transmission on public transport. This work involves measurement campaigns, CFD simulations and the development of simple risk models.

Other interests include the use of Gaussian plume models for urban pollution dispersion modelling. As part of the PMCOST project Huw is leading Imperial’s involvement using ADMS to investigate the impact of local scale measures on air quality. He also led a project funded by the Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling Liaison Committee (ADMLC) assessing the suitability of Gaussian plume models for the modelling of near-field dispersion.

Huw completed his PhD in fracture mechanics at the University of Manchester where he developed an innovative method for the fast solution of crack propagation in structures.
