Ioannis conducts research in ocean and coastal engineering. He focuses on the appropriate description of waves and wave-related processes, and their effects on engineering design applications. A large part of his research involves experimental simulations, field data analysis and numerical modelling of random waves in the coastal zone,as well as the associated statistics. He has developed state-of-the-art statistical models that guide the industry in the design and reliability assessment of coastal and offshore structures. He is also looking at the optimisation of marine reneable devices and their co-benefits in coastal and environmental protection. Building upon the accurate stochastic representation of waves, he is leading projects related to the calculation of extreme wave loads on coastal and offshore stuctures and the long-term evolution of coastal bathymetry. His research interests span a wider range of coastal applications including: hydrodynamics, wave-structure interaction, marine renewables and sediment transport.

Ioannis is the Director of the Hydrodynamics Laboratory at Imperial College London. He completed his PhD on wave statistics at the Fluid Mechanics Section at Imperial College London. He holds a Diploma (MEng) in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and a MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the same institution.

Ioannis has been teaching modules related to Coastal Engineering and Coastal Processes to undergraduate and postgraduate students since the late stages of his PhD. He is the module co-ordinator of Statistics in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Ioannis has been supervising a wide range of Undergraduate and Postgraduate research projects that include experimental, numerical and analytical investigations. His primary focus has been on projects that investigate the nonlinearity, randomness and complexity of hydrodynamics and their consequences on the design of coastal structures and sediment transport processes. Additionally, Ioannis has been a part of several major joint industry projects that seek to achieve a better understanding of the environmental loading on existing marine and coastal structures.
