Summary

Ioannis completed his PhD on wave statistics at the Fluid Mechanics Section at Imperial College London. He holds a Diploma (MEng) in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and a MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the same institution.

Ioannis has been teaching modules related to Coastal Engineering to undergraduate and postgraduate students since the late stages of his PhD. In addition to Coastal Engineering, he is the module co-ordinator of Statistics in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Ioannis has been supervising a wide range of Undergraduate and Postgraduate research projects that include experimental, numerical and analytical investigations. His primary focus has been on projects that investigate the nonlinearity, randomness and complexity of hydrodynamics and their consequences on the design of coastal structures and sediment transport processes. Additionally, Ioannis has been a part of several major joint industry projects that seek to achieve a better understanding of the environmental loading on existing marine and coastal structures.

His research interests lie in various aspects of Coastal and Offshore Engineering. These include the statistical representation of wave heights and crest heights in intermediate and shallow water depths, non-linear effects arising in random seas, wave propagation on variable bathymetry and wave breaking. Also, Ioannis is working on modelling coastal flooding, both in terms of the hydrodynamics and the statistics/risk assessment. Finally, his recent research looks at the interaction of coastal structures with wave, the estimation of wave overtopping and the hydraulic performance of porous structures.
