Jang Ah Kim is currently a Research Associate in Biosensing at the Stevens Group in Department of Materials, Imperial College London. Her research interests are towards utilisation of novel micro/nano fabrication techniques, such as two-photon polymerisation (2PP), to develop surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) structures, micro-optics, photonic crystals, and plasmonic structures for diverse biomedical diagnostic applications. 

She graduated from Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 2011 and then completed her PhD in Nanotechnology from same university in 2017. During her PhD, she worked on development of chemical vapour deposition (CVD)-grown graphene-based fibre-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors for biochemical detection and development of fiber-optic contact force sensors for remote and in situ monitoring of physical contact between tissue and cardiac ablation catheter. She joined the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery in April 2017 (until August 2021) and her research mainly focussed on development of miniature fibre-optic sensors for minimally invasive surgeries (MIS)/interventions and photonic/plasmonic point-of-care (POC) sensors for rapid diagnosis of diseases (e.g. bacteria detection for infection screening, etc.). She also worked to discover and apply the interaction between plasmon excitation and bacteria to develop a new micro-manipulation device for biomedical applications.
