John has been successful in obtaining research grants from the UK and US Government (EPSRC, ONR, MRC & DTI/TSB), European Commission, UK and overseas companies. He is Executive Co-Director for the two AVIC Centres at Imperial College London (Director - Professor Jianguo Lin FREng). He has delivered 35 plenary or invited key-note lectures and, for example, gave the 50th BSSM Strain measurement lecture to 450 people at the 16th International Conference on Experimental Mechanics at the University of Cambridge in July, 2014, for which he received the BSSM Measurements Lecture Award.

His research expertise is structural integrity of materials including manufacturing and micro-structural effects. He has published 296 conference and journal papers; contributed to 16 books, supervised 59 PhDs and 19 RAs. Examples include: impact and blast performance of laminated glass and composite structures for aerospace, transport and civil applications, creep life of materials in power-station plant, life-time evaluation of water and gas distribution systems and high-strain rate properties of materials for defence applications and also for medical research.
