This paper shows that nonlinear optical techniques can help clarify the unknown correlation length in probing the disorder in the transition frequencies of molecules making up an aggregate. The general method proposed is, namely, to obtain information on molecular frequency correlations from correlations in exciton transitions, measured in pump-probe spectroscopy. To this end, this paper analyzes the nonlinear optical response of linear J-aggregates described by the Frenkel-exciton Hamiltonian with Gaussian molecular frequency disorder with arbitrary spatial correlations.

We report on the exciton dynamics in the J-aggregating dye 5,5′, 6,6′-tetrachloro-1,1′-diethyl-3,3′-di(4-sulfobutyl)-benzimidazolocarbocyanine which is known readily to form J-aggregates, even at room temperature and at a low concentration. We performed a series of time-correlated singlephoton-counting experiments at different emission wavelengths and at different temperatures in the range between 1.5 and 125 K. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the relative fluorescence quantum yield was determined. © 1994 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Experimental details can be found elsewhere. The samples were exposed to light in the spectrometer for approximately on hour at 295K during which less than 5 % activity was lost. the femtosecond spectrometer had an instrument response of ≈ 150fs (FWHM), with a white light probe and tunable excitation beam. Two forms of excitation pulse were used in the experiments described here. One pulse was centered at 665nm which selectively excites C670, and one at 694 nm which selectively excites C680. Data was analyzed globally taking account of components monitored over a range of timescale and wavelengths.
