Summary

Accounting - BUSI97373

Aims

The first half of the module aims to contribute to the development of the participant’s managerial potential by explaining both the principles of financial accounting, techniques for extracting information from the accounts and an awareness of some of the complexities and minefields of accounting.

The emphasis of the second half of module will be on the valuation of business enterprises, individual projects within these enterprises, and how this value is distributed across the firm’s securities.

The Company Accounts are the primary source of financial information for a business. This information can be used to analyse the performance and efficiency of the business as well as to value it.  The objective of the module is to enable the student to be familiar with both the preparation and extraction of information from these accounts.

The module serves as an introduction to the organisation of financial markets, and how the two key financial instruments, stocks and bonds, are traded in these markets. Within this context of the module, the student will understand how to value these securities; directly from their accruing cash flows, and indirectly by distributing the value of the business across its issued securities.
