Cilliers JJ, 2006, Active and passive gangue in mineral processing, disposal and economics, IMPC 2006 - Proceedings of 23rd International Mineral Processing Congress, Pages: 2432-2438

A new gangue classification that distinguishes between active gangue and passive gangue is proposed. This is based on the capacity of the gangue to consume additional resources or create pollution. This classification increases understanding of how concentrate gangue reduction should be approached. A further consequence is that the gangue activity lifetime is considered; for example whether the gangue activity is restricted to a relatively short period in a float cell, or decades in a tailings dam. The economic relationship between the grade-recovery curve and the smelter agreement is reviewed using an illustrative example. The concentrate economic value is extended to take into account the undefined and long-term cost of waste management associated with mineral extraction. Three approaches are illustrated to reduce the lifetime and volume of active gangue resulting from mineral extraction; two based on changes in process operation and economics and a third on separation of active and passive gangue in the tailings.

Wilkinson AJ, Randall EW, Durrett D, Naidoo T, Cilliers JJet al., 2003, The design of a 1000 frames/second ERT data capture system and calibration techniques employed, Pages: 504-509

The design of a pulsed bi-directional DC system for ERT measurement was reported at the 2nd World Tomography Conference. It was suggested that this simple and low cost method would have the potential for high-speed operation. This paper describes such a system and presents data that verifies its operation. A calibration technique is described which improves the sensitivity of the current pulse measuring system and allows phenomena such as gas distribution in aeration systems to be investigated. Further more, the calibration scheme compensates for the effect of impellers and baffles present in the measuring tank and allows more accurate reconstructions to be performed in the areas of interest without having to explicitly include them in the FEM model.
