Birch DM, Morrison JF, 2009, Effects of very-large roughness in turbulent channel flow, Pages: 661-664, ISSN: 0930-8989

The streamwise velocity statistics in fully-developed rough-wall channel flow have been investigated over grit- and mesh-type surface topologies. The flow was demonstrated to be fully-developed and two-dimensional up to the fourth moment of velocity. Though the flow over both surface types appear to exhibit a limited logarithmic region, the regions of inner and outer scaling over the mesh surface fail to overlap. The influence of the spanwise periodicity of the mesh upon the outer scaling is discussed.

Naguib AM, Morrison JF, 2008, Low-order flow-field estimation using surface-shear-stress information in a transitional boundary layer

As an initial step in the design of an estimator for the control of transient growth in laminar boundary layers, a POD analysis is performed on a DNS database using the wall-normal velocity and vorticity appearing in the linearised perturbation equations. Eigenvalue spectra show that while most of the energy resides in the first seven spanwise Fourier modes, only two POD modes are required for the capture of virtually all the energy. Linear Stochastic Estimation is also used to provide estimation of the POD coefficients using the spanwise component of the surface shear stress. Overall, the agreement between actual and estimated POD modes is good for both the wall-normal velocity and vorticity, although it is worse for the less dominant modes. Flow separation is generally associated with a loss of some kind; loss of lift, drag increase, pressure recovery losses, etc. Therefore, the control of separation lias been studied for many years to improve the aerodynamic efficiency. The present investigation is focused on the understanding of the effect that a combination of active dimples has on flow separation In both laminar, and, more importantly, turbulent boundary layers, with an aim to understand the guiding or defining parameters affecting the structure of the flow excited by vortices shed from dimple actuators. The dimples were arranged in the form of a spanwise periodic perturbation across the boundary layer prior to separation, creating counter-rotating vortices and producing a three dimensional spanwise variation near the separation line. This forces an entrainment of high momentum fluid into the surface leading to a delay in flow separation.

Dearing S, Arthur G, Morrison JF, Cui Zet al., 2006, Electroactive polymers for flow control, Pages: 47-54

The design of EAP actuators, in the form of active dimples for flow control, is described. Manufacturing techniques have been adopted from MEMS processing. The final design comprises 10mm dimples manufactured on 10mm silicon wafers; the electrodes consist of graphite powder. Initial electromecanical tests have been carried out and experimental data correlate well with theory. The results show how the response is sensitive to the input signal of the driving voltage and material properties such as the Shore A number. © The Institute of Engineering and Technology.
